"PROJECT OPPORTUNITY"

 OPPORTUNITY YOUTH  16-24

In Oakland a strong and healthy economy today and in the future depends on the success of our young people in the labor market.  Thousands of  Oakland's youth are not working or in school—especially youth from poor communities, youth of color, and youth facing other barriers to employment. Oakland Youth First’s “Project Opportunity” works to ensure that these Opportunity Youth have access to much needed employment and training. Opportunity Youth facing the most significant challenges—such as extreme poverty, homelessness, or justice system involvement—often need very intensive assistance in getting and keeping employment, yet are at risk of being left behind even by workforce development programs designed to serve vulnerable young people. Oakland Youth First provides programming for Opportunity Youth facing the most significant barriers to employment.

CORE PROGRAMS
LAND

Oakland Youth First provides youth and family services and training through digital and media arts. Our State-of-the-Art production studios develop skills in music and video broadcast. In addition, our OYF Land Program trains our participants to use renewable energy options as keys to our self-sustaining futures. Lastly, our students engage in business through our Small Business Development Program.

OYF's use of innovative technology is the foundation of our success in engaging our participants with their future.

AIR

OYF youth learn aviation skills and career opportunities in commercial and private aviation and related support industries. The Tuskegee Airmen, and the Bay Area Black Pilots Association provide FAA certified Flight instructors that certify ground simulator and aircraft flight hours for our participants.

OYF utilizes STEM elements coupled with Linked Learning techniques, and working professionals; acting as role models, trainers and mentors, in our summer and after school programs.

SEA

The Port of Oakland is the 5th busiest port in the United States. The Serendipity, OYF's 32’ cabin cruiser, explores the Bay Area marine environment, estuaries and shorelines. Certified Coast Guard instructors and retired service personnel train OYF participants for marine related careers.

OYF's interwoven career alternatives allow our participants unique oppor-tunities to gain knowlege in STEM and life-related areas of learning. Our Linked Learning approach ensure our young students are better prepared in life and are more positive contributors to their communities.

PROGRAM BUZZ

Linked Learning, Common Core and STEM

Using flight and boating simulators; getting creative with digital arts and film; learning to install solar panels on buildings; developing a business plan for creating an App start-up and hands-on experience, are some of the techniques OYF staff uses, with proven educational concepts, to motivate learning, stimulate critical thinking, and inspire our youth to aspire toward productive, constructive and rewarding lives and careers.

      The Common Core State Standards

Provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for their future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy and students in their personal lives.

                                  S.T.E.M.

The United States has become a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. Yet today, that position is threatened as comparatively few American students pursue expertise in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) — and by an inadequate pipeline of teachers skilled in those subjects.

   Four Elements Define Linked Learning

Linked Learning builds on more than four decades of experience gained by California schools that combine academic and technical content to generate high student achievement. It combines four elements that research identifies as vital to student success.

Challenging Academics: A rigorous academic core curriculum featuring instruction in essential college preparatory subjects such as english, math, science, social studies, foreign language and visual and performing arts.

Technical Skills and Knowledge: A demanding combination of career and technical course work emphasizing the practical use of academic learning and preparing youth for high-skill, high-wage employment.

Work-Based Learning: A range of opportunities to learn through meaningful real-world experiences, including internships, apprenticeships and school-based enterprises.

Support Services: Academic and social supports, such as counseling and additional personal services.
